Guus Meeuwis

Guus Meeuwis will appear at Rotterdam Ahoy on 2 April 2027. The native of Brabant has steadily built a Dutch-language repertoire since the mid-1990s that relies on simple melodies, acoustic ballads and lyrics that stay close to everyday life. He once started out with Vagant on the student circuit and broke through in 1995 with “Het is een nacht (Levensecht)” ("It’s a night (Lifelike)"). Since then his albums have followed at an unhurried pace, with songs that work without frills and above all focus on the story and the chorus.

At Ahoy that line comes together in a set that connects old and new. Expect songs that invite sing-alongs alongside moments that remain smaller and more intimate, from the classics that made him big to recent material from Uit het hoofd (2023). Meeuwis is at home on large stages thanks to his Groots met een zachte G series (literally “Groots with a soft G”); you hear that experience in the way he lets his band breathe around the melody, leaving room for a choir-like feeling and for silence where it fits. No embellishment, but songs that stand as they are. For those who speak his language and know his stories, Ahoy is the place where that collective memory is briefly awakened.
