Michelle David & the True Tones

Michelle David

Raised in a New York church, Michelle David began singing at the age of four and joined her first group at five. Before settling in Europe, she toured the world with Broadway productions, starred in theatrical shows such as The Sound of Motown and Mahalia, and recorded for artists including Diana Ross and Michael Bolton.

Together with Paul Willemsen, Onno Smit and Bas Bouma, she formed Michelle David & The True-Tones, evolving from The Gospel Sessions into a band with its own sound: rooted in gospel, with branches extending into soul, funk, afrobeat and rhythm & blues. The group has released seven albums (The Gospel Sessions Vol. 1–4, Truth & Soul, Brothers & Sisters) and has received honors such as BBC 6 Music Album of the Year, FIP Album of the Month and an Edison Award nomination.

On 27 February 2026 they released the album Soul Woman, a reflection on identity, healing and growth, inspired by Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield and D'Angelo.
