Info
Soweto Gospel Choir brings its voices to La Gare du Midi in Biarritz on 14 December 2026 with Pou Zot!, a concert conceived to make South African gospel resonate in the present. Founded in Soweto in 2002 around David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, the choir brings together around thirty singers who weave a repertoire where South African gospel, African-American spirituals, reggae and reinterpretations of pop classics intersect. On stage this material swells: tight harmonies, percussive grooves, call-and-response, all driven by a collective energy made for live performance.
The collective’s journey has intersected with major milestones and notable appearances: the 46664 concert associated with Nelson Mandela, Live Earth in 2007, and the final draw for the 2010 World Cup in Cape Town. On record, landmarks such as Voices from Heaven, Blessed, African Spirit, Grace, Freedom, Hope, and more recently History of House in 2024 with Latroit and Groove Terminator, attest to an enduring curiosity. Their voices have also been heard on Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman’s “Down to Earth” for WALL‑E, Christopher Tin’s “Baba Yetu,” a tribute to Fats Domino, and on several tracks of Peter Gabriel’s album I/O. With Pou Zot!, the choir unfolds this generous musical spectrum, rooted in tradition yet winking to contemporary influences.
