Genesis Owusu

Genesis Owusu brings his shape-shifting blend of hip-hop, funk, post-punk, soul and experimental pop to Strange Brew in Bristol on 1 December 2026. Born in Ghana and raised in Canberra, Kofi Owusu-Ansah has built a project where rapped cadences slide into sung hooks, angular guitars cut through tight grooves, and dancefloor pulses sit next to punk edges. His early singles stood out for rhythmic writing and elastic vocals; debut album Smiling with No Teeth (2021) pushed themes of identity and isolation into lean funk, direct rap and sudden melodic lift. STRUGGLER (2023) sharpened the mix again, folding rock bite and spoken word into tracks that move with a raw, physical logic.

On stage, he blurs boundaries between MC and bandleader, flipping from close-up rap to collective surge without dropping the momentum. Expect clipped basslines, percussive snaps and choruses that catch without smoothing the grit, with that swing from confrontational verses to release. Moving between hip-hop rooms, indie spaces and festival stages, Genesis Owusu treats genre as material rather than a boundary, channeling a set built for movement, tension and release, and a voice that can pivot from bark to croon in a beat.
