Mad Professor

On Saturday 4 July 2026, Mad Professor brings his live dub laboratory to the Hare & Hounds in Birmingham. A key figure of second‑generation dub and founder of the Ariwa label, he turns the mixing desk into an instrument: bass pushed upfront, voices dissolved in echo, riffs stretched, clipped and rebuilt in real time. The set drifts from tough, roots‑anchored rhythms to digital textures and lovers rock shadings, with soulful detours that might flip a Marvin Gaye motif into haze and reverb. It’s dub as performance, sculpted on stage with spring reverbs, delays and filters, more like live improvisation than a fixed playlist.

His path runs from the Dub Me Crazy series to No Protection, his rework of Massive Attack’s Protection, with collaborations alongside Lee “Scratch” Perry and remixes for The Orb, Beastie Boys, The KLF, Depeche Mode and Yard Act. On stage, he pulls rhythms apart then drops them back in with weight and space, tracing the line between sound system tradition and studio experimentation.
