Info
On 9 May 2026 at Chalk, Brighton and Hove, Toots and the Maytals bring the Reggae Got Soul 50th Anniversary Tour (1976–2026) to the stage. Formed in Jamaica in the 1960s, the Maytals helped carry the music from ska and rocksteady into reggae, even fixing the word in the culture with the 1968 single Do the Reggay. Reborn as Toots and the Maytals with the 1969 album Sweet and Dandy, the group shaped a sound steeped in gospel energy, close-knit harmonies and muscular soul, and stacked up tracks that have crossed generations: 54-46 Was My Number, Monkey Man, Pressure Drop, Funky Kingston, Broadway Jungle, Bam Bam, Time Tough and, of course, Reggae Got Soul.
Today the band is led by Leba Hibbert, daughter of Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, who carries the flame with her own voice and writing. A singer who has released her own recordings and worked with Sly & Robbie, Jimmy Cliff and more, she fronts the current line-up as it revisits the catalogue and salutes the album at the heart of this tour, tracing a timeline from Kingston dancehalls to international stages without losing the groove that made these songs endure.
