Info

On 30 September 2026 at Wylam Brewery in Newcastle, Bill Callahan brings his plainspoken baritone and unadorned folk writing to the room. First known as Smog in the 1990s, he shaped lo-fi songs with a stark edge; since 2007 he has recorded under his own name, refining a language of spare guitars, unhurried tempos and clear, narrative lyrics that linger on daily gestures, relationships and open landscapes. Albums like Woke on a Whaleheart, Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle, Apocalypse and Dream River mapped that path, followed by Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, Gold Record and Ytilaer, where the frame widens while the tone stays close to the bone.

On stage, Callahan tends to let the words lead, leaving space around the voice while guitar lines trace subtle shifts. Sets often reach across his catalogue, folding early minimalism into newer songs with a light country tint. In Newcastle, he brings that steady focus and lived-in storytelling to a concert where the pace leaves room for detail, and the songs find their shape in the grain of the voice and the quiet pull of the rhythm.
