Zinc & Copper Jasmine Guffond

Zinc & Copper is a contemporary brass chamber music ensemble. Their sound fuses mood, modes, frequency, timbre and microtonality. The ensemble sound is characterised by the warmth of low brass, harmonic colour and extended playing techniques. The trio was founded in 2005 by Robin Hayward and, since 2014, consists of Hayward, Elena Kakaliagou and Hilary Jeffery. Their music is the result of years of practical research into brass chamber music, just intonation and microtonality as a trio, and collaborations with composers, musicians and artists. Live performances by Jasmine Guffond encourage embodied listening, exploring sound as a physical force, felt through low-end frequencies and dynamics that range from barely audible to moments of intense volume. Guffond’s releases explore abstract sound and reference traditional musical structures, developing a musical language concerned with sonic phenomena and the emotive power of music. She is interested in the interplay between human and machine agency in electronic music-making, and extra-musical concepts influence her aesthetic process. Her 2024 album Alien Intelligence explored themes of machine autonomy through Max/MSP programming and a Serge modular synthesizer, a process that questioned an assumed central position of human subjectivity in socio-technical assemblages. Her 2025 album Muzak for the Encouragement of Unproductivity is a poetic inversion of Muzak’s traditional role in stimulating productivity in the workplace.
