With Au-dessus de tout, Az stages a quiet taboo: the lack of enthusiasm. Rather than celebrating passion at all costs, he dismantles the imperatives that demand we be fully committed, go all out, and portray a life that is always meaningful. His material is the lingering everyday—the lukewarm desires, the disillusionment. From this he crafts a tightly written, precise and rhythmic stand-up in which a sense of melancholic ennui becomes a comic device and a shared mirror. Az observes the ordinary without seeking feats, exposes stock phrases and performative postures, and turns them into clear, concrete scenes that ring true. The show speaks of the extraordinary because it pervades everything, but from the standpoint of someone who sees nothing extraordinary in it—and it is there, on a human scale, that the era reveals itself.
