Info
On June 29, 2026, at the Théâtre Antique in Vienne, Jazz à Vienne brings together three singular trajectories: Jeff Mills with Jean‑Phi Dary, Sun Ra Arkestra and Verb.
A Detroit pioneer, Jeff Mills has for decades been shaping a strand of techno oriented toward science fiction, balancing minimal pulses with shifting sonic architectures. On stage with keyboardist Jean‑Phi Dary, he moves this vocabulary out of the clubs for a face‑to‑face between machines and improvisation, where sequenced motifs, synth lines and harmonic departures answer one another. The duo establishes a flow that plays with time, space and narrative without relinquishing the physical energy of electronic sound.
Born in Chicago in the 1950s around Sun Ra, the Arkestra pushed the big band toward free playing, collective trance and an Afrofuturist aesthetic. Now led by Marshall Allen, the ensemble weaves written arrangements, improvised detours, vocals and percussion into a sonic theatre where the cosmic voyage serves as the guiding thread. A vast repertoire, from Jazz in Silhouette to Space Is the Place, it continues to reconfigure itself in the present.
Verb completes the bill, adding another perspective to this conversation between experimental jazz and electronic exploration.
