Info
On May 14 at Wavelength @ St. Anne’s in Toronto, Brazilian songwriter Sessa returns with Pequena Vertigem de Amor (“Lil’ Love Vertigo”), his fourth album. From São Paulo, he pares bossa nova down to a bare, luminous core, favoring close-mic’d vocals, supple guitar lines and subtle fractures of rhythm. The new material leans into Brazilian pop with an intimate touch, where textures carry the melody and grooves twist in understated ways. On stage, Sessa often grounds the set in Afro-Brazilian percussion and choral harmonies, letting his songs drift between hush and pulse.
Kolumbo brings the night’s tropical jazz current. The quartet, steered by Texas-born, Brooklyn-based composer Frank LoCrasto, threads 60s exotica and 70s Brazilian fusion through a laid-back jazz-funk frame: warm keys, fluid bass and unhurried percussion that nudges the music forward without rush.
Opening, Toronto project ARTU keeps things rooted in songcraft and texture, blending Brazilian-leaning rhythms with contemporary, experimental colors to sketch melodies that feel both immediate and gently off-center.
