Lizz Wright

On 24 October 2026 Lizz Wright will perform at De Doelen in Rotterdam. The American singer, raised in a preacher’s household in Georgia, found her voice in the church choir, with gospel as a firm starting point. In Atlanta she delved deeper into jazz and broke through in the early 2000s. Her debut Salt (2003) on Verve set the tone: original songs alongside newly coloured standards, at the crossroads of jazz, soul and gospel. With Dreaming Wide Awake (2005) and The Orchard (2008) she moved toward a more folky, intimate sound, while Fellowship (2010) brought the spiritual layer to the fore. Freedom & Surrender (2015) and Grace (2017) link soul with Americana and the American South; the live album Holding Space (2022) captures her stage energy; Shadow (2024) gathers ballads, spirituals and acoustic shades.

In concert, Wright’s focus is on the song and the space within the music: spare arrangements, grooves where needed, silence where possible. Expect new material alongside favourites from earlier records, plus carefully chosen covers that she makes her own. A set at the intersection of jazz, soul, gospel and folk, carried by a band that listens and breathes.
