Info

Rhythm and Standard Time present the Toronto return of Egyptian Lover at Standard Time on March 21, 2026 at 1:00 am.

An architect of electro and 808-fueled funk, Egyptian Lover has spent over four decades shaping the sound of the underground. Emerging from Los Angeles in the early '80s alongside Ice-T and Uncle Jamm's Army, he fused hip-hop, funk and futurist electronics into something his own - raw, robotic and physical.

Known for the Roland TR-808, his early tracks like "Egypt, Egypt" and "Freak-A-Holic" became club records, bridging West Coast hip-hop with the influence of Kraftwerk and Prince. This approach helped shape electro.

After a run of LPs throughout the '80s and '90s, Egyptian Lover returned in the new millennium, releasing albums 1985 (2018) and 1986 (2021) on his Egyptian Empire imprint, and performing for Boiler Room and at venues such as Berghain, Fabric and Printworks.

The performance is a live hybrid. With 808 drum machine, vinyl and live vocals, Egyptian Lover brings elements that defined his early recordings.

At Standard Time: stripped-back drum machine patterns, elastic basslines and funk-laced synths.

Joining him are Toronto electronic artists Tony Price and DJ Barbi.

Doors 9:00 pm.
