Alice Diop & Angel Bat Dawid

On April 13, 2026, at La Dynamo de Banlieues Bleues in Pantin, Alice Diop and Chicago musician Angel Bat Dawid present The Voyage of the Black Venus, a musical variation conceived between France and the United States. A clarinetist, composer, vocalist and ensemble leader, Angel Bat Dawid connects spiritual jazz, free jazz, gospel and spoken word, in the lineage of Chicago’s experimental scene. Her practice draws on improvisation, memory and forms of collective ritual, with a playing style in which breath, song and pulses coalesce into shifting textures.

Opposite her, filmmaker Alice Diop brings her sense of narrative and listening, an attention to voices and trajectories that opens up the performance space. Together they weave a score in which clarinet, voice and words intertwine, making the figure of the Black Venus resonate within a moving soundscape. A co-created work, the project progresses through dialogues and counterpoints, leaving room for nuance, singing, silence and the collective. A stage encounter that crosses Alice Diop’s documentary rigor with Angel Bat Dawid’s improvised energy, for a sensitive and contemporary journey.
