Info

On May 17, 2026 at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, The Afghan Whigs bring their 40th Anniversary Tour to town. Formed in Cincinnati in 1986 by Greg Dulli and John Curley, the band blends alternative rock with soul and rhythm and blues, writing narrative-driven songs carried by taut guitars and groove-focused rhythms. From the DIY debut Big Top Halloween through the Sub Pop years with Up in It and Congregation, they moved toward Gentlemen and Black Love, records steeped in themes of relationships, guilt and desire, then 1965. After a break in the 2000s, the group returned with Do to the Beast, In Spades and How Do You Burn?, continuing a dark, soulful approach that carries on stage.

Mercury Rev joins the bill. Formed in Buffalo at the end of the 1980s by Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper, the group shifted from noise-informed experiments to an orchestral, psychedelic pop language. High vocals, strings and brass, and cinematic atmospheres define a catalog that runs from Yerself Is Steam and Boces to the pivot of See You on the Other Side, then Deserter’s Songs and All Is Dream. With longtime collaborator David Fridmann, they pursued The Secret Migration, Snowflake Midnight, The Light in You and their reimagining of Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete, a repertoire often rearranged on tour.
