Steel Pulse will celebrate its 50th anniversary on stage on 28 May 2027 at La Coopérative de Mai in Clermont-Ferrand. Born in 1975 in Birmingham, in the Handsworth district, the group led by David Hinds and Selwyn Brown laid the foundations of British roots reggae, carried by tight vocal harmonies and lyrics that confront racism, social inequality and the realities of the diaspora. Emerged at the end of the 1970s with Handsworth Revolution and then Tribute to the Martyrs, they quickly broadened their reach with True Democracy, before expanding their sound in the 1980s without relinquishing the political edge.
Crowned with a Grammy Award for Babylon the Bandit, Steel Pulse has traversed the decades while maintaining that bass‑and‑drum tension, those block harmonies and a taste for a direct, front‑on message. The concert promises a journey through their classics, from the Island Records era to more recent albums, with Rally Round the Flag and other tracks that continue to bridge the history of reggae with the live energy.
