Blues is, I claim, music with roots in West African music, especially music from Mali and Nigeria. When the enslaved came to the Caribbean and later the United States, the music developed into a form of American folk music, which since then formed the foundation for a large part of American musical culture—from jazz, funk and hip-hop to country and bluegrass. In other words: blues is a lot of different things.
Blues is also a feeling. Longing, sorrow, melancholy, yearning and heartbreak are, with some exceptions, part of the recipe. My plan is as follows: We will explore the concept of blues through lyrics and various related musical genres and use the concert as a kind of pseudoscientific investigation. We will move past delta blues, jazz, funk, big-city blues and more.
