On October 28, 2026 at 229 London, SHOLTO brings a full 12-piece lineup to the stage for a deep dive into the music of David Axelrod, the composer-producer who turned the sounds of the 60s and 70s into widescreen, genre-blurring soul. Drummer and bandleader Oscar Sholto Robertson anchors the set from behind the kit, pushing Axelrod’s cinematic writing through a live mix of psychedelia, jazz, and orchestral grooves.
Rather than a tribute-by-numbers, this show focuses on what made Axelrod so enduring: those rich arrangements, dramatic builds, and rhythmic pockets that later became prime material for hip-hop digging. SHOLTO’s own background—split between London and time in Los Angeles, and shaped by collaborations across indie, soul, and studio worlds—fits the project naturally, with analogue textures, tight horns and strings, keys, vocals, and narration all working together to give Axelrod’s catalogue a new, living pulse.
