If the story of Protomartyr begins in Detroit in 2010, it is on stage that the band really carved out its reputation: a dry, dense, taut post-punk, somewhere between noise rock and art rock. The quartet led by Joe Casey's deep, almost spoken voice moves forward with lyrics delivered with surgical precision, carried by Greg Ahee's angular guitars and a rigid rhythm section that never relents. Since No Passion All Technique (2012), then Under Color of Official Right (2014) and The Agent Intellect (2015), Protomartyr hardened its writing without smoothing it, before widening the frame again on Domino with Relatives in Descent (2017) and Ultimate Success Today (2020), darker and more expansive. With Formal Growth in the Desert (2023), the group continues this nerve-wracking trajectory, between controlled dissonances and abrasive clarity.
