On April 17, 2027 at Meridian Arts Centre in Toronto, Silkroad Ensemble joins forces with vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. Founded in 1998 within Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, Silkroad Ensemble is a shape-shifting collective of musicians, composers and storytellers from traditions across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Their music moves between chamber interplay, traditional repertoires and contemporary creation, mostly acoustic, where written forms, improvisation and oral transmission meet. The lineup evolves with each project, welcoming artists such as Wu Man, Kayhan Kalhor, Kinan Azmeh or Sandeep Das. Recent programs include Sing Me Home, Falling Out of Time and American Railroad, with artistic direction by Rhiannon Giddens since 2020.
Born in Miami in 1989 to a French-Haitian family, Cécile McLorin Salvant studied classical voice and jazz at the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud in Aix-en-Provence before taking the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2010. Now based in New York, she has built a repertoire that threads standards, originals and rarely revived songs in English, French and sometimes Haitian Creole, with a keen sense for narrative and character. From WomanChild to Mélusine, her albums trace a path where vocal jazz crosses chanson, blues, early-music colors and cabaret inflections—an approach that meets naturally with Silkroad’s collaborative, border-crossing sound.
