There are voices in music that seem from another time, presences that belong to neither yesterday nor today, so fully do they encapsulate several eras, hovering above trends. Laure Briard is one of them: retro in form, yet in substance the musician—whose career has been rich in aesthetic turns—has all the makings of a contemporary composer, with that little touch of magic that bathes her songs in an eternal glow. Since Révélation (2015), a tribute to 1960s French pop, Laure Briard has evolved her world through encounters and travel: warm arrangements shared with her long‑standing collaborators, a pivotal tour in Brazil and a collaboration with Boogarins, EPs in Portuguese, touches of bossa nova and folk, culminating in the Californian desert atmosphere of Ne pas trop rester bleue (2023). Setting travel memories aside for a moment, Laure Briard drew for this new album on an inward energy at a time in her life when striking out on an adventure was no longer really an option. For Voyage Mental, the musician taps into a more interior source. Inspired by a period marked by motherhood, this new record unfolds spare, sensitive and introspective songs, seeking a balance between nostalgia and a keen awareness of the present.
