Fat Freddy’s Drop celebrate 21 years of Based on a True Story with a show that reconnects with the album that set their path. Formed in Wellington in 1999, the New Zealand crew — producer Fitchie, singer Joe Dukie, keyboardist Dobie Blaze and guitarist Jetlag Johnson — forged a sound where reggae and dub meet soul, jazz and a club-informed pulse. On stage, they let the grooves breathe, stretch songs into long arcs, and let the horns and electronics shift the temperature without breaking the flow.
Based on a True Story took them from local buzz to international stages, and this anniversary is a chance to revisit that period with the seasoned touch of a band that has kept refining its craft through Dr Boondigga & The Big BW, Blackbird and beyond. Warm vocals, deep basslines and a live chemistry that favors improvisation make the core of their set, with reworks that lean into space, weight and melody.
