Sigur Rós brings its atmospheric post-rock to Waterfront Hall, Belfast, on 4 September 2026, in collaboration with the Ulster Orchestra. Formed in Reykjavík in 1994 around Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson and bassist Georg Hólm, the band stretches songs into slow-blooming arcs, with bowed guitar, layered drones and Jónsi’s falsetto sung in Icelandic or an invented phonetic language. With an orchestra on stage, those textures widen: strings and brass carry long harmonies, percussion underlines the quiet-to-storm dynamics, and recurring themes surface with a clear, minimalist edge.
Across albums like Ágætis byrjun, ( ), Takk…, Valtari, Kveikur, the orchestral Odin’s Raven Magic and the recent Átta, Sigur Rós has shaped a catalogue that lends itself to large ensembles. This collaboration highlights re-scored pieces from across their work, with subtle electronics woven into the arrangements and space left for silence as much as volume. Here, the band’s material is presented in a symphonic light.
