From the avant-garde spirit of Red Red Meat to Califone’s deconstructed Americana, Tim Rutili’s musical metamorphoses have always been held together by a common thread: a connection to roots, fragmented and reassembled according to a personal sensibility, which has made his folk-inflected visions a point of reference for those today who engage with the union of tradition and experimentation.
Between 2023 and 2025 Califone released two intimately linked albums (on Jealous Butcher, the label that reissued Red Red Meat’s catalog): Villagers and The Villager’s Companion (nine tracks that did not make the first album). Both confirm Rutili’s compositional work and present a dusty, rough folk-rock open to experimentation.
