Info
Tortoise play The Concert Hall in Toronto on July 3, 2026. Formed in Chicago in 1990, the quintet has spent three decades reshaping instrumental rock by folding jazz phrasing, electronic textures, dub low-end and minimalist patterns into a fluid, collective language. Jeff Parker, Dan Bitney, Douglas McCombs, John Herndon and John McEntire rotate between drums, bass, guitar and keys like moving parts, treating rhythm as structure and melody as atmosphere.
Their 90s run — Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996), TNT (1998) and Standards (2001) — set the coordinates for a catalogue that keeps evolving. On stage, the group stretches that map in real time: interlocking grooves, patient builds and quick turns, with themes that surface, drift and recombine. No frontman, no spotlight, just five musicians listening closely and building together.
This date brings their free, organic approach into focus, where acoustic and electronic colors meet and the lines between rock, jazz and experiment stay loose. A live set that moves, shifts and settles into its own logic, anchored by pulse and detail rather than showy effects.
