Formed in York, Pennsylvania in the 1980s, Live built its signature sound around Ed Kowalczyk’s voice and guitar — sharp riffs paired with direct melodies and introspective lyrics. From Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper through Secret Samadhi and The Distance to Here, the band forged a 1990s alt‑rock identity that remains potent onstage. After a period apart, Kowalczyk returned, and the group now balances early staples with later work such as V, Birds of Pray and Songs from Black Mountain, maintaining their mix of drive and clarity.
Big Wreck originated in mid‑1990s Boston around Canadian singer‑guitarist Ian Thornley, fusing heavy rock, alternative sensibilities, progressive elements and a bluesy tone. Early albums In Loving Memory Of... and The Pleasure and the Greed introduced a taste for extended song forms and layered guitar work. Reconstituted in 2010, the band moved into more textured territory with Albatross, Ghosts and Grace Street, followed by ...But For the Sun and a series of EPs, crafting live shows where weighty riffs and expansive atmospheres interchange.
Hailing from Montréal, The Damn Truth channels a 1970s‑rooted rock feel, blending bluesy bite, hard‑rock punch and a touch of psychedelia. Fronted by Lee‑La Baum alongside Tom Shemer, PY Letellier and Dave Traina, the quartet ranges from slow‑burn ballads to denser grooves across releases like Dear in the Headlights, Devilish Folk and Now or Nowhere — the latter partly recorded with Bob Rock. Onstage, their lean, guitar‑forward approach is aimed at impact without excess.
