Tinariwen has long carried a music rooted in the Sahara that they call assuf, a blues of wandering and of the homeland left behind. Dry-toned electric guitars, minimalist bass lines, restrained percussion and call-and-response vocals form a highly recognizable language. The lyrics, in Tamasheq, evoke roads, exile, encampments and memory. Formed on the paths of exile, the group exchanged weapons for instruments after the 1990 Tuareg rebellion, and has since continued to carry a nomadic identity around the world. On 17 April 2026, Tinariwen will play at Paloma Nimes. On stage, the collective unfolds looping riffs, driving rhythms and rough voices that move like a caravan. The pieces stretch out or tighten according to the impulse, making room for guitar dialogues and the group’s dynamics, returning to the hypnotic backbone of their albums and the communal dimension of their sound.
