Tricky

Tricky, born Adrian Thaws, first made himself heard as an MC on Massive Attack’s Blue Lines. A key British figure on Bristol’s trip-hop scene alongside Portishead, he established from the start a deep, velvety voice carried by slow grooves and hazy textures. His debut album, Maxinquaye (1995), created with Martina Topley-Bird, cemented a hybrid sound blending hip hop, dub and rock-tinged shadows. This was followed by Nearly God and Pre-Millennium Tension in 1996, Angels With Dirty Faces in 1998, Juxtapose in 1999 in collaboration with Muggs of Cypress Hill and DMX, and Blowback in 2001. It’s a trajectory marked by deep bass, gritty beats and electric atmospheres.

On stage, Tricky favors restraint and tension, moving between landmarks from his catalogue and newer material, letting the grain of his voice steer the performance.
