Info
Organized around the recent acquisition of a drawing by Josef Hoffmann, “A Total Work of Art” is a focus on the Musée d’Orsay’s collections devoted to drawings from the Vienna Secession. Through the selection on display, discover the principles of an innovative architecture emblematic of Viennese modernism.
The architectural collections were enriched in 2023 by a rare drawing by Josef Hoffmann, complementing the fine group of forty-two sheets by Otto Wagner’s pupils—Emil Hoppe, Marcel Kammerer and Otto Schönthal—acquired in 1997. Executed in the year the Stoclet Palace in Brussels was completed, this project of striking graphic force testifies to the Austrian master’s investigations at the height of his career. Centered on this acquisition, presented for the first time, the focus returns to the notion of the total work of art, at the heart of the concerns of the architects of Viennese modernism.
