Throughout the narrative one idea returns: if love’s opponent is not hate, perhaps it is fear—the kind that freezes you and keeps you from daring. From a shared glance to a life-upending date, he unfolds scenes in which we recognize ourselves, between awkwardness, tenderness and self-mockery.
