Pokey LaFarge will perform on March 16, 2027 at the New Morning in Paris. Born Andrew Heissler in Illinois, he honed his craft in the tradition of itinerant musicians, before settling in St. Louis and shaping a distinctive style there, blending folk, 1920s–1930s jazz, country blues and western swing.
Discovered in the early 2010s with Riverboat Soul and Middle of Everywhere, he has cultivated a taste for acoustic formats, arrangements inspired by early jazz, and lyrics that tell stories of journeys, cities, and turning points. His signing with Third Man Records marked a turning point with the album Pokey LaFarge (2013), after which he broadened the spectrum: electric guitars and more direct songwriting on Something in the Water and Manic Revelations. Since Rock Bottom Rhapsody, he has also drifted toward pop, R&B and Latin-inflected tones, a progression continued on Rhumba Country (2024), without sacrificing the precision of his singing or the sense of narrative.
