Emilia Märtensson and Matt Robinson bring together lyrical songwriting, improvisation, and contemporary European jazz in music that is both intimate and expansive. Their long-standing musical partnership centres on a shared love of space, clarity, and expressive storytelling, creating performances that are immersive, spontaneous, and deeply connected.
Parliamentary Jazz Award-winning vocalist Emilia Märtensson is recognised as one of the distinctive voices in UK jazz, known for her expressive tone and emotionally nuanced storytelling.
Pianist, composer, and producer Matt Robinson, known for his work with Snowpoet, is noted for his melodic improvisations, harmonic richness, and imaginative use of piano, synthesisers, and live electronics.
Drawing inspiration from European jazz duos such as Sidsel Endresen and Bugge Wesseltoft and Norma Winstone and John Taylor, Märtensson and Robinson subtly reimagine the voice-piano format through improvisation, extended techniques, and understated electronics, while preserving its essential intimacy.
For this performance at the Vortex on 17/11/2026, the duo is joined by saxophonist Adam Waldmann, bassist Max Luthert, and drummer Will Glaser. Together, the quintet expands the duo's detailed musical world into a textured ensemble, balancing openness, lyricism, and collective improvisation.
