Florian Krewer, woven thin*

The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris presents Florian Krewer: woven thin*, the artist’s first solo exhibition in France. Organized following the donation of several works by the artist to the museum, this exhibition, at the heart of the collection’s parcours, aims to immerse visitors in the pictorial universe of the German-born artist based in New York since 2020.

Krewer’s practice is deeply autobiographical, nourished by a direct confrontation with the world around him, in all its raw beauty as well as its violence. Drawing on both his lived experience and his imagination, the gallery of characters that populate his landscapes and ethereal interiors is stripped of any context and seems to lead an autonomous existence. Dancers, performers, animals and solitary figures traverse changing urban landscapes. They appear detached, as if freed from the gravity of the physical world and its social constraints. In this weightless universe, Krewer’s paintings celebrate moments of intimacy and a collective resilience amid an environment that is most often hostile. At the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, sixteen monumental canvases are on view, some of which are previously unseen. Hung in a tight arrangement, they produce a dense pictorial panorama that reflects the artist’s practice.

Florian Krewer (born 1986 in Gerolstein, Germany) studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Among his recent institutional exhibitions are Nice Dog, M WOODS Museum, Beijing (2023); everybody rise, Aspen Art Museum (2023); and Es liebt Dich und Deine Körperlichkeit ein Verwirrter, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2022). His works are in the collections of the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris; the National Museum of Modern Art - Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Albertina Museum, Vienna. In 2022, Krewer received the Jean-François Prat Prize from the Bredin Prat Endowment Fund. He lives and works in the South Bronx, New York.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog published by VeneKlasen Gallery, due to be published in October 2026.
