Affinities are at once bonds of kinship and proximity; they are the apt term to evoke the relationship between Islamic arts and the Department of Decorative Arts at the Louvre Museum. Not only have these works circulated since the Middle Ages between East and West, but they have inspired European decorative arts through their technique or ornament.
For more than a century, Islamic arts were shown in the Department of Decorative Arts. It is this dialogue between these two collections that the Louvre Museum’s exhibition 'Affinities — The Wonders of Islamic Arts in the Department of Decorative Arts' seeks to renew around three cross-cutting themes: light, color, and sculpture.
