The Buttshakers are a soul and funk band from Lyon. Their music pays homage to the 1960s and 1970s.
Formed more than a decade ago, the group has established itself on the European music scene thanks to its genre-blending, rich Stax-style brass and a carefully crafted rhythm. For ten years now, the band has been lighting up stages.
The soul of the group, its driving force, is Ciara Thomson, whose voice alternates between galvanizing and tearful, and whose charismatic presence recalls the divas of soul and funk. Originally from Saint Louis, Missouri, Ciara rediscovers the sounds of her childhood, between blues and gospel, for the single Back In America, from the album Arcadia (2021), which examines today’s America.
This song Back In America is an introspection on growing up in a country where you are always told that life is perfect here, that we have everything figured out better than others. After traveling and discovering the rest of the world, one discovers that it is an illusion and that there are still many topics on which this country is far from being at the forefront.
