Lee Fields arrives on February 9, 2027, at the Transbordeur in Villeurbanne, with a soul sound that has clung to him since the late 1960s. Born in North Carolina, he forged himself early on in small clubs and juke joints, with a way of inhabiting each track like a performer: a rough but warm voice, energy inherited from funk, and a sense of groove that owes as much to brass as to rhythmic tension. After beginnings around 1969 and records that blended soul, R&B and funk in the 1970s, Fields enjoyed a quieter spell before returning in a big way. His recent period, notably with The Expressions, has put his ballads and his more hard-edged tracks at the center of the stage: direct soul, southern-flavored at times, always driven by tight arrangements. On stage, he lines up the old and the new without nostalgia, with the same generosity and a presence that bridges the golden age to the present moment.
