Light Asylum is the techno-punk music project of vocalist and producer Shannon Funchess, founded in Brooklyn, New York in 2007. Light Asylum emerged in 2009 at the forefront of a movement turned revival of late 70s to 90s electronic music inspired by pioneers of Detroit techno, Belgian new beat, EBM, gothic rock, Chicago house, new wave and synth pop.
Autumn 2011 would herald a new gothic club anthem, “Dark Allies”, with Funchess emoting eternal life in her contralto singing “Forever...and ever” on the debut In Tension EP (Mexican Summer/Kemado Records). A debut full-length self-titled LP released the following spring aided in igniting the dark wave genre that coincided with the cold wave revival in NYC’s underground music scene. Funchess carried the torch above ground to venues Radio City Music Hall, Koko, the Sydney Opera House, Moulin Rouge, Wave-Gotik-Treffen and Berghain.
Light Asylum will be in concert at Botanique on 23 September 2026 at 16h30.
2026 will mark the first release of Light Asylum since 2012.
