If ska has a spine, it has a name: The Skatalites. Formed in Kingston in 1964 by session players who were already in high demand, the group laid the foundations for a sound in which the brass lead the dance, carried by a syncopated rhythm section, a supple bass, and a true sense of groove. At the time, their music drew as much from jazz, rhythm and blues, and calypso as from the nascent ska, before naturally slipping into rocksteady and then reggae, across sessions and tracks that defined Jamaica's golden age of the 1960s.
Re-formed in the 1980s, the ensemble returned to the road with undiminished energy, touring and recording, while evolving with the musicians. The Skatalites in concert are heritage played in the present: a living, precise orchestra, built for live performance and bodies in motion. Join us on August 11, 2026 at Le Dodu in Marseille.
