Info
Almost eight years after their last album, Mondo Drag returns with Through the Hourglass. The period in between was marked by personal losses, the pandemic, and a longer band hiatus. The singer and keyboardist John Gamiño addresses grief, the transience of time, and the sense that time inexorably passes.
With the new members Conor Riley (bass) and Jimmy Perez (drums), the band found new energy. The songs look to the past, present, and future, and fuse personal experiences with psychedelic and progressive sounds.
Tracks such as 'Burning Daylight' address helplessness in the face of the California wildfires, while 'Death in Spring' is dedicated to friends who died due to violence, addiction, and mental illness. The album is markedly more personal than earlier releases.
The title Through the Hourglass refers to the TV series Days of Our Lives and also recalls Gamiño's late mother. After years of stagnation, the band sees the album as a fresh start and the opening of a new chapter in their development.
