This is not a World Music Festival.
This is PHRE.
PHRE Festival at Import Export opens with a night between ritual sound, experimental electronics, noise-pop and intense club energy, featuring Davide Ambrogio, Use Knife, Palanca and DJ Dr. Lee.
Calabrian singer and multi-instrumentalist Davide Ambrogio presents Mater Nullius, a project that connects traditional rituals from Calabria with contemporary questions around nature, spirituality and origin. With vocals, earthy percussion and electronic elements, his five-piece ensemble creates a sound that feels ancient, physical and present.
Use Knife bring together Iraqi vocalist and percussionist Saif Al-Qaissy with Belgian musicians Kwinten Mordijck and Stef Heeren. Their sound moves between Arabic vocals, analog synths, distorted samples, heavy percussion, EBM pulses and folk tonalities. It is confrontational, emotional and politically charged, music that hits with force and stays in the body.
Munich-based Palanca, the duo of Constanza Meléndez and Daniel Door, perform experimental noise-pop with distorted taishokoto, bass synths, acoustic drums and sample-based beats. Their songs move through broken apartments, spambot incantations and critical infrastructure.
DJ Dr. Lee closes the night with an experimental, loud and empowering selection. She is co-founder and member of We Won’t Shut Up! and Holy Fingers.
