Joshua Redman Quartet

On November 20, 2026 at Meridian Arts Centre, Toronto, tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman leads his quartet for an acoustic set that moves between post-bop clarity and open-ended improvisation. Shaped by the New York scene after his early Thelonious Monk Competition win, Redman has forged a sound that balances melodic narrative, harmonic detail and a keen sense of groove. With piano, bass and drums as partners, he stretches forms without losing the pulse, shifting from lithe momentum to quieter, song-focused moments.

The program leans on original material and reworked standards, tracing lines back to albums like MoodSwing and Elastic and, more recently, the song-centered Where Are We. Themes open into conversation, solos stay connected to the tune, and the quartet lets space and dynamics do part of the talking. It’s a setting where Redman’s warm tenor can sing plainly, turn gritty when needed, and keep the dialogue alive from one piece to the next.
