Info
On September 16, 2026 at RA Centre in Ottawa, CityFolk Festival brings together three distinct takes on roots, rock and folk: Marcus King, Alabama Shakes and Les Grands Hurleurs.
Raised in Greenville, South Carolina, Marcus King forged a sound built on electric blues, southern rock and soul. First noticed with The Marcus King Band and its run of albums from 2015 to 2018, he then tightened his songwriting under his own name with El Dorado (2020) and Young Blood (2022), produced in Nashville by Dan Auerbach. On stage, he balances taut guitar work with a clear focus on voice and songcraft, shifting easily between full-band energy and more stripped formats.
Formed in Athens, Alabama, Alabama Shakes unites Brittany Howard, Zac Cockrell, Steve Johnson and Heath Fogg around a rock foundation steeped in soul and blues. Boys & Girls (2012) set a raw, melodic template; Sound & Color (2015) opened it toward atmospheric tones and subtle psychedelia, while keeping direct, song-first writing at the core.
From Quebec, Les Grands Hurleurs, led by Nicolas Pellerin (fiddle, vocals, podorythmie), link traditional Québécois music to contemporary arrangements. Across albums up to Layon (2024), they move between dance tunes and songs, acoustic strings and tight rhythmic work, folding in folk, rock, jazz and global influences without losing their local roots.
