After black midi drew to a close in 2023, bassist and sometime frontman Cameron Picton chose neither a solo turn nor a fixed lineup. From that in-between space he shaped My New Band Believe, an open ensemble that shifts according to the material. The project carries over his taste for oblique narratives and unstable forms, but trades black midi's taut rock for a more acoustic palette: English folk shadows, chamber-pop turns and sudden dynamic swells. Players from the UK's experimental scene drop in and out, keeping the lineup fluid from record to stage.
On the group's debut, songs move through contrasting moods and themes with a kind of dream logic, guided by Picton's distinctive, sometimes unreliable narration. Around him, a rotating cast of close collaborators - including Kiran Leonard, Caius Williams, Steve Noble and Andrew Cheetham - folds improvisation into focused yet flexible arrangements that build, unspool and reassemble, letting fragments connect in unexpected ways.
My New Band Believe appears at Concorde 2 in Brighton on 28 October 2026, bringing these shifting, acoustic-leaning compositions to the stage with a fluid cast shaped around the set.
