Info
Factory International presents Bill Callahan at Aviva Studios in Manchester on 2 October 2026. A defining voice of American indie folk since the early 1990s, Callahan first recorded as Smog, shaping stark, lo-fi albums grounded in economy and detail. Since 2007 he has released music under his own name, honing a songwriter’s approach built around a deep baritone, conversational phrasing and narratives that explore relationships, rural landscapes and the small gestures of everyday life.
On stage he favours restraint: unhurried tempos, clear guitar lines, discreet arrangements and a country tint that keeps the focus on the words. Sets often range across his catalogue, from Woke on a Whaleheart, Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle and Apocalypse to Dream River, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, Gold Record and Ytilaer. The music unfolds patiently, with space for imagery and detail, tracing a path from the Smog years to his recent work and showing how his songs hold together in a quiet, grounded way.
