Info

On 8 July 2026, The Divine Comedy brings Neil Hannon’s chamber‑pop world to Aylesbury Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury. Led since the late 1980s by the Northern Irish songwriter, the project blends classic pop craft with orchestral colours, piano lines and a taste for literate storytelling. Hannon’s songs sketch wry social scenes and intimate snapshots, moving between dry humour and quiet melancholy without forcing the contrast.

Onstage, The Divine Comedy revolves around Hannon’s voice and presence, surrounded by a flexible set of musicians. The arrangements can swing from crisp band energy to string‑tinted textures, keeping the narrative front and centre. Across the set, the repertoire draws from Liberation and Promenade through Casanova and Fin de Siècle, then Regeneration, Absent Friends and Victory for the Comic Muse, up to Bang Goes the Knighthood, Foreverland and Office Politics. The thread remains the same: careful melodies, conversational phrasing, and small stories that open out into bigger pictures. A live format suited to theatres, built for clarity and detail rather than volume, and a catalogue that rewards attention to the words as much as the tunes.
