Sebastian Marx returns to the stage with a new show in preview, picking up exactly where you’d expect: observing everyday life, cultural misunderstandings and that slight disconnect between French codes and American reflexes. After twenty years spent “analyzing” France, he’s developed a theory that seems simple: there are only six types of French people. The question remains where you fit, where he places himself, and whether putting people in boxes isn’t, in the end, just another box.
Between France and the United States, Paris and “the rest,” religion and atheism, fatherhood and childhood, Sebastian Marx explores this constant tug-of-war and the difficulty of finding one’s place, with a direct, precise stand-up that feels familiar enough for us to recognize ourselves. An evening that challenges the labels we wear… and the ones we stick on others.
