Michelle Gurevich

Michelle Gurevich arrives in Barcelona on 26 November 2026 at Sala Upload. Born in Toronto into a Russian‑Jewish family and formerly known as Chinawoman, she made the leap from her work in film to music in the mid‑2000s. Since then she has carved out a distinct territory between sadcore, slowcore, indie pop, art pop and certain folk folds: slow tempos, austere, lo‑fi production, spare keyboards and a deep contralto voice that imparts a restrained melancholy.

Her repertoire has taken shape on records such as Party Girl (2007), Show Me the Face (2010), Let’s Part in Style (2014), New Decadence (2016), Exciting Times (2018), Ecstasy in the Shadow of Ecstasy (2020) and It Was the Moment (2024). Chamber‑like, intimate songs with a dry irony, threaded with echoes of orchestral song, dark romanticism and a clearly cinematic sensibility. Live, Gurevich usually works with bare arrangements and contained dynamics, allowing the lyrics and diction to set the pulse. Between tales of weary loves, farewells and nocturnal scenes, her set proposes a slow, precise progression, with that Russian inflection in melodies and dramatic turns that has made her sonic signature recognizable.
