Noelle Perna « Mado fait son Cabaret »

Mado la Niçoise returns as mistress of ceremonies in Mado Does Her Cabaret, the new format by Noëlle Perna. The character, created behind a bar in Nice, keeps her characteristic accent, her sharply defined gestures and that eye for observation gleaned from barroom conversations. Here she trades the one-woman show for a collective cabaret in which she hosts, teases and reins in a troupe of guests, between sung numbers, sketches and surprises. The tone remains what we know from her: a frank look at neighborhood life, couples, money and the small vanities of everyday life, delivered in rapid-fire language and with lines that hit the mark.

On stage, Mado sets up her little world, slips from one aside to another, inserts herself into the acts, fires off barbs and prompts the performers as if at the bar. The pace is lively, the transitions clever, and the energy flows between control and improvisation. It is Noëlle Perna’s way of expanding her universe into a collective format without losing the Niçoise touch that made Mado distinctive.
