On 19 September 2026, three bands from the Canadian indie scene will meet at Berlin’s Columbiahalle: Metric, Broken Social Scene and Stars. A shared line-up that on stage concentrates the connections of a scene in which the musicians have been collaborating for years.
Metric, led by Emily Haines and James Shaw, push their songs forward with synthesizers, angular guitars and direct hooks. Between indie rock, new wave and synthpop tensions arise that often come across as somewhat rawer and more driving in concert. Their most recent albums, Formentera and Formentera II, open up the electronic side further without abandoning the rock foundation.
Broken Social Scene, the mutable collective around Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, brings a dense web of guitars, brass, choirs and textures. The group shifts between compact songs and wide‑breathing passages, carried by changing voices from the extended circle that also includes members of Metric and Stars.
Stars rely on the interplay of vocals from Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan. Their indie pop balances chamber arrangements, keys and buoyant beats; the lyrics revolve around closeness, ruptures and everyday urban life. Over the years the band has amplified its electronic pulse without losing sight of the narrative clarity of the songs.
An evening that makes the Toronto–Montréal axis audible and brings together three perspectives on indie between melody, density and space.
