New Model Army

On 20 December 2026 New Model Army will play at the Melkweg in Amsterdam. The band from Bradford began in the early 1980s in the post-punk corner and gradually moved toward alternative rock with folk inflections and more atmospheric layers. Around singer-guitarist Justin Sullivan, the constant linchpin, the lineup changed frequently, marking different phases in their sound. Early records like Vengeance (1984) and The Ghost of Cain (1986) set the tone with direct songs and lyrics that cut politically, socially and personally, driven by tight rhythms and angular guitars. With Thunder and Consolation (1989) the folk element became more prominent, including violin, while The Love of Hopeless Causes (1993) and Strange Brotherhood (1998) further developed the melodic side. Recent albums such as Between Dog and Wolf (2013), Winter (2016), From Here (2019) and Unbroken (2024) emphasize a darker, narrative approach, full of dynamics between rock energy, an almost tribal pulse and slower atmospheres. On stage the band delivers this wide palette with a focus on rhythm, tension and lyrics, where new material and older favourites seamlessly come together.
